Millions of PC users across the country are going to be in for a rude awakening come March 11, 2007. That’s when the new Daylight Saving Time goes into effect in 48 States.

So what does that mean to you? Well, if you use any Windows Operating System from Windows 95 through XP (Pro or Home) Service Pack 1, you could be facing a big problem. And it doesn’t matter if your PC is used in your home, or in your office.

If your PC is trusted to do any type of program operation based on time, you may run into an unforeseen problem when March rolls around.

Those folks running the previously mention Operating Systems wrongly assume that their PC’s will automatically switch to DST. They are right. BUT, not until April. By then, you could have a real problem on your hands.

Here’s a portion of an email that a major corporation sent out to all of it’s offices nation wide. “The list of impacted systems could include anything from the Heating/AC system to Access Door Controls to Trading Systems and Blackberries.”

The company also noted: “All associates using the Outlook Calendar will be impacted by this change. In order for Outlook to see the new DST rules, an updated tool must be run on every user’s PC.”

While Microsoft will provide a free “fix” for users of XP with Service Pack 2 or 3, other users could be left dangling in the wind. Or, they can contact Microsoft for a fix, at a fee.

The bottom line is, you need to update your PC’s clock/calendar system as soon as possible to avoid any type of log jam or delay in your projects. The sooner you take steps to correct this on your PC, the quicker you’ll be able to breath easy.

We've all heard the term KISS at one time or another - "Keep It Simple, Stupid." However, the majority of salespeople violate this basic principle more often than not.

Let me start with some examples of what I'm talking about. At one position I held, I sat next to someone who could have been a top salesperson. He and I both operated much the same in that rather than cold call, we ran our own personal marketing programs to generate leads and simply took the calls that came in as a result. The problem is what he did with the calls. When someone called me, ready to buy, I immediately went into closing the deal and making arrangements to either come out with the paperwork or to fax it over. He, on the other hand, went into a full-length company story and a lot of other information that he absolutely should not tell a qualified prospect unless they ask for it. The end result is that people who called ready to sign up for one of our services lost interest and didn't buy anything at all.

Another example is what happens every time I try to make a business purchase. Here I am, saying "Yes, I'm going to buy," and the sales rep lauches into a company story about how long they've been in business, who their big clients are, and on and on. Lucky for these salespeople, the product usually sells itself and I still buy. However, I'm willing to bet that a lot of people don't. Nothing is more frustrating than picking up the phone saying, "Hi, here I am ready to buy," and having some rep go into a story bragging about how great the company is and all that they can do. That comes off as pure arrogance to a business owner. What's more, talking about your big enterprise clients alienates most small business owners. They assume their needs will be placed second to those of the big dogs and that they'll be treated as just a number when calling for service.

I think most training is at the root of this massive problem. Every course I've taken has gone through the steps of a sale. The problem is, what if all the steps don't take place? Consider "objection handling." When I was working for that company I mentioned earlier, many of my prospects had no objections because my marketing pieces took care of them in advance. By assuming that each of these steps are going to take place, a lot of salespeople will cause something to happen when it really shouldn't have to begin with. If a prospect doesn't come up with any major objections, don't give them a reason to!

I've seen a lot of managers require their reps to fill out a "lead sheet" that documents each step of the sale. This assumes that each of the steps will happen when they may not. If you're required to maintain these types of records, skip anything that doesn't happen naturally. Don't induce a prospect to enter a selling phase that may not only be unnecessary, but may cause you to lose the sale entirely.

Use the KISS test when you're selling. Always ask yourself if what you're doing is actually necessary. Believe me, you'll save yourself a lot of wasted time and lost sales by doing so. I did.

This week I want to discuss what I call, "The Kiss of Death" in a relationship. Here's the scenario: You meet a single girl that you're absolutely crazy about. Everything is going ok the first few dates and you are on cloud nine. Then she starts acting cold towards you and seems distant.

You are confused and can't figure out for the life of you what has gone wrong. You were hitting it off so well, you both laughed and had good times together, and the sex was fantastic.

Then all of a sudden she tells you that she wants to cool it for awhile. In other words she wants to stop seeing you for awhile. You ask her why and she replies, "I need some space."

This answer is what I was referring to as, "The Kiss of Death" in a relationship. What she is really trying to say is she does not want to date you anymore. It's just her way of saying it's over and she does not want to be tied down to a relationship.

So, when a woman tells you that she needs space just let her go. Do you really want to be someone who doesn't want to be with you? Just move on, get over it and get on with your life. Perhaps it was just not meant to be. She may try to come back into your life later on, but for now just let her have her space. If you want to get back with her later on then that's your option.

This same scenario has happened to me a few times in my dating experiences. It happens to a lot of guys and you just have to deal with it. Chalk it up to as part of the dating game. You win some and you lose some.

In closing, keep in mind that some single women are afraid of commitment and they end relationships that are getting to close by saying that they need their space and want to stop seeing you.

Kiss the Ring: Hierarchy Matters

Someone once asked a Washington insider how to deal with important people whom you can’t stand. His reply? “You put on your respectful face and you don’t blink.” This strategy is known in business circles as “kissing the ring.” Its origins lie in a much earlier era, when royalty and clerics wore rings of office denoting their status. Bowing your head as you kissed their rings was how you showed respect for their office, while not necessarily feeling that sentiment towards the characters themselves.

Why go to the trouble to show deference to someone you don’t personally like or respect? In the cut and thrust world of business, as in the political sphere, it’s all about survival. Or, to look at it more positively, enlightened self-interest. Like it or not, the business world is structured by a strong sense of hierarchy. Why else would we be so fixated on gaining promotions and better titles? Those high up can have a significant impact upon your reputation and career: positive if they like you and see you playing by the rules, negative if they feel slighted by you in some way. Showing them the appropriate respect helps keep your career path obstacle free.

“Kissing the ring” might mean responding in a neutral to positive way when someone important says something off base in a meeting. Or staying positive with your boss when he or she doesn’t understand what you’re trying to do or say. However irritated or amazed you feel, keep your facial expression kind and free of negativity, a kind of poker face. It’s worth practicing this in front of the mirror so that it’s ready to put on when you need it.

“Kissing the ring” doesn’t mean being sycophantic though. It’s just about treading carefully around egos. There’s nothing wrong with telling a senior person that you think there might be a better way of doing things, but just make sure that you think strategically and don’t react there and then, especially if there are others present. If you are genuinely concerned about something you might want to bring it up in private in a neutral way but not make a big deal out of it. You do this by talking about it in a low-key way, tactfully introducing your point by saying, “By the way, what do you think of…” or, “Is there is a case to be made for this other point of view?”

Are there “don’t kiss the ring” moments too? You bet. As soon as anything looks the slightest bit immoral or illegal you need to stop and think. Don’t jump to conclusions, but once you’ve confirmed that something improper is up, do everything you can to extricate yourself from the situation before you get into trouble. If, for example, your company requires that the highest level person at a dinner should pick up the expenses then you might hesitate before paying for something so that your boss doesn’t have to put it on his or her expense report. While illegality is something that you should always report, without exception. There are ex-employees of Enron or Health South, currently in jail, who probably wish they had spoken up, or even left their jobs, rather than keeping mum.

“Kissing the ring” is one of a repertoire of respectful behaviors that will serve you in good stead with high ranking people. At some point in your career you will have to suck in your gut and show deference to a senior person whom you can’t stand. Be prepared for it.

The word ‘KISS’ sent a tingling sensation down under your heart. Frankly, I wake up everyday in my life in search of a KISS. And where I find it daily from two guys, all the way down to Silicon Valley. It is called the ‘Google’.

Can you imagine, if the KISS is so hot and most wanted, why most of business executives and CEOs keep running away from it? Well, all the management Guru are still to find and I am certainly not running away from a KISS.

What is KISS? It is “Keep it Simple, Stupid”. It is a business idea which has done wonder in numerous businesses but still strategist and planner keep running away from KISS.

Simplicity in life goes a long way. Perfect example of this is Google home page, with a search box and very limited text here and there. I do not have to tell you, who are the cool guys from Google. They kept it as simple as it could be. But believe me; they had to think this “Out of box”. Is it very difficult and complex to stay simple?

There is an old saying that, “tougher than recognizing the merits of simplicity is sticking with it.” Logical business thinking loves and admires simplicity but why executive do not like it. They buy into the idea of jazzy and sassy words. Most of executives give in these trying time of their convention. But few resisted and become star Kisser.

When AOL launch it version for window they kept it as simple as it could be. Steve Case, then CEO, said, “We always said that we viewed AOL as being about the Internet and a whole lot more and less about the technology and more about the user experience”. But people mocked and criticized him for his simplicity. Nerds from Silicon Valley called his company useless and non-technical.

But Steve Case was not a person get moved by them. Many people use to give in face of these criticisms and loose their leading edge. Let me make it simpler, with a quotation from jack Welch, “We are in one of simplest profession. After all business is not the rocket science”.

Can I ask a simple question would you like to kiss your girl friend through a video conference? Huuh! I will never.
